AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety, working with local, state and federal partners, recovered a cesium-137 radioactive source in Midland County over the weekend.
According to DPS, a corporal assigned to the agency's Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit detected elevated radiation levels on Friday, July 24, while conducting routine patrol near South County Road 1210. Using additional radiation detection equipment, the trooper conducted a systematic survey and determined a cesium-137 radioactive source was emitting radiation from beneath the ground.
After confirming the presence of the source, the corporal requested assistance from partner agencies to coordinate a recovery operation.
On Saturday, DPS personnel, along with representatives from the FBI, the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Midland Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, the Midland Health Department, Midland Emergency Management and Chevron security, conducted radiological assessments and developed an excavation plan.
Officials established designated hot and cold zones and continuously monitored radiation levels throughout the operation. Personnel rotations were conducted in accordance with established safety protocols to limit radiation exposure.
The source was located approximately 6 to 8 inches below the surface and identified as a 100-millicurie sealed cesium-137 radioactive source manufactured in April 1967.
Authorities said the item was safely recovered after radiation readings were verified. The operation concluded without injuries, personnel contamination or any threat to the public.
DPS said the recovery highlights the specialized capabilities of its Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit and its partnerships with local, state and federal agencies in responding to hazardous materials incidents.
The Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit consists of one lieutenant, one sergeant and six corporals stationed across Texas with specialized training. The unit's mission is to detect and interdict radiological and nuclear materials that are outside regulatory control to prevent attacks and mass casualty incidents.
The unit uses vehicle-mounted radiation detection systems, backpack detection systems, radioisotope identification devices, personal radiation detectors and unmanned aircraft equipped with radiation detection technology. In addition to routine patrols, unit personnel provide security screenings for major public events and dignitary visits.
DPS is also equipping every state trooper with a personal radiation detector and training them to serve as primary radiological and nuclear threat screeners.
