AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Monday the creation of the Texas Jobs Council, an advisory board aimed at strengthening workforce development efforts and preparing Texans to fill high-demand jobs across the state.
The council held its inaugural meeting at the Governor’s Mansion and will focus on improving coordination between business and labor groups while addressing workforce shortages in skilled trades and other key industries.
Abbott said the initiative is intended to support Texas’ continued economic growth by expanding training opportunities and reducing barriers to workforce development.
"Texas right now is the hottest state in America for business and labor opportunities," said Governor Abbott. "For us to maintain our dominance, business and labor are working together to meet the high demand for high skilled labor, positions like electricians, pipe fitters, welders, plumbers, truckers, and a whole lot more.
"Today, we galvanized that partnership with the launch of the Texas Jobs Council. We are unified on a mission that benefits all Texans. A mission that will keep Texas number one for business, keep Texas number one for jobs, and keep Texas number one for workforce training, ensuring great careers for generations of Texans."
The governor was joined at the announcement by labor and business leaders, including representatives from the Texas Association of Business, the Texas Workforce Commission and multiple trade unions.
The council will be co-chaired by Brent Taylor of Teamsters Local 745 and Megan Mauro, interim president of the Texas Association of Business. Members include leaders from industry groups such as the Texas Association of Manufacturers, Texas Oil and Gas Association, Texas Chemistry Council and Texas Association of Builders, along with representatives from labor organizations.
According to the governor’s office, the Texas Jobs Council will develop recommendations to reduce regulatory barriers, improve workforce training systems and align state policies with industry needs.
The group is expected to propose executive actions for immediate implementation by state agencies and provide policy and legislative recommendations ahead of the 90th Texas Legislative Session.
A final report outlining recommended actions and proposals is scheduled for release in November 2026.
