ROCKSPRINGS, TX — A Rocksprings High School student died Sunday while helping move a telephone pole near the school’s track and field facility.
The 17-year-old junior has been identified as Samson Reyes.
According to Edwards County Sheriff J.W. Guthrie, Reyes was helping move a wooden telephone pole that was about 30 feet long around 5:30 p.m. Sunday when he suffered significant head injuries.
Several Rocksprings ISD staff members were reportedly present when the incident occurred.
No other students were injured, and no criminal charges are expected to be filed, Guthrie said.
The Rocksprings Edwards County Volunteer Fire Department shared its condolences in a Facebook post Monday.
“Our department would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Reyes & Venegas families, to the Rocksprings ISD and to our community,” the post stated.
“The loss of a young man whose life was just beginning to soar is heartbreaking. Our hearts are very heavy.
“We would like to thank all our members who responded to such a tragic accident and to all the first responders as these are what we do to respond to our community when needed but the things our first responders see are memories that they can never erase and each call is always remembered but this one is one that our first responders will always carry close to their hearts as they gave all they could but God was in charge and His plan was His plan and greater than our own understanding.
“PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THE FAMILIES AS THEY NAVIGATE THIS WEEK AND YEARS TO COME. Our community is hurting for you and with you.”
Rocksprings ISD closed school Monday in observance of Reyes’ death.
The small town of about 850 residents is located approximately 55 miles southeast of Sonora.
