AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety on Thursday expanded its Aircraft Operations Division with a new Cessna 208 Caravan outfitted with real-time communications and imaging technology to support law enforcement and emergency response across the state.
Designated N968TX and based at McKinney National Airport in DPS’ North Texas Region, the aircraft will provide airborne overwatch and tactical response in one of the division’s busiest areas.
“This is a game-changer for all law enforcement across Texas, not just DPS,” said DPS Chief Pilot Stacy Holland. “With this advanced technology and real-time connectivity, our teams can transmit live situational data from the sky directly to command staff and field units, giving everyone the same real-time picture. That translates to faster decisions and safer outcomes for both officers and the public.”
Region Chief Jeremy Sherrod called the aircraft a “force multiplier” for North Texas. “With so much activity in this part of the state when it comes to air operations, the technology on board will give our teams a new level of awareness, and Texans can sleep better at night knowing we have this new asset to support our law enforcement partners and keep them safe,” he said.
According to DPS, the aircraft includes advanced mapping and scene-management tools, high-definition and infrared imaging, cellular and satellite communications for uninterrupted data sharing, and a custom tactical flight officer console for mission coordination. DPS said the satellite connectivity makes the Caravan one of the first of its kind in U.S. law enforcement capable of continuous live video and audio downlink to command centers and officers in the field.
The aircraft is dedicated to Lt. Pilot Jerry “Ray” Ragan, a longtime member of the Aircraft Operations Division who died in 2020 after a battle with brain cancer. Ragan served DPS and Texas for more than 19 years, including a decade as an AOD pilot.
