KERRVILLE, TX - At least 13 people have been confirmed dead from the Guadalupe River flooding, Friday, July 4, and there are believed to be about 20 children still unaccounted for from a summer camp, according to the Kerr County Sheriff's Office.
The death toll in the area is expected to increase.
An overnight flash flood caused river levels to rise at terrifying speeds. At Comfort, the Guadalupe River reportedly rose 22 feet in 30 minutes.
There have also been reports of an entire RV park in Ingram being swept downstream with families still inside trailers.
Youth summer camps in the area had to be evacuated overnight. One of them, an all-girls camp called Camp Mystic, had reports of about 20 children that were unaccounted for and cabins that had possibly washed away.
"This came at night, when people were asleep in bed," Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. said at a news conference. "Please pray for our community."
Rain continued to fall in the Hill Country late Friday morning, but it is expected to clear this afternoon.
Governor Greg Abbott issued the following statement about the flooding:
“Texas is providing all necessary resources to Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt and the entire Texas Hill Country dealing with these devastating floods. The State of Texas today has mobilized additional resources in addition to the resources sent in preparation for the storms. I urge Texans to heed guidance from state and local officials and monitor local forecasts to avoid driving into flooded areas.”
