Historic West Texas Ranch Hits Market for $23.5 Million

BAIRD, TX — A vast ranch property covering more than 3,100 acres in Callahan County has been listed for $23.5 million, offering a mix of scenic landscapes, historical sites and modern amenities.

Known as Spring Mesa Ranch, the property sits in the high terrain of the Callahan Divide and includes a mountain peak rising to 2,182 feet. The ranch features an extensive water system with dozens of stock tanks, several water wells and miles of internal roads, supporting both livestock operations and wildlife habitat.

Central to the ranch is a Texas Hill Country-style residence built in phases from 2005 to 2010, measuring over 16,700 square feet with eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, multiple fireplaces, a sauna, a swimming pool and sweeping views from a crow’s nest lookout. Additional housing includes a renovated guest home called the “Happy House,” a ranch manager’s residence, and facilities such as a horse barn, a workshop and a skeet shooting pavilion.

Spring Mesa Ranch also preserves fragments of local history, including remnants of the Harper House built in the 1890s, the site of an old String Town settlement, a hand-dug well, and the gravesite of two pioneer children dating back to 1895.

The property is located off FM 2228, roughly 19 miles west of Abilene and accessible via I-20 from Dallas-Fort Worth. It is offered fully furnished, excluding some personal items, and includes ranch equipment such as trucks, tractors and utility vehicles.

With abundant wildlife, restored native grasses and expansive views, the ranch is pitched as a potential private retreat, family estate, or corporate getaway for those looking to invest in a piece of Texas heritage.
