13 Killed in San Antonio-Area Floods

 

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A total of 13 people died late last week from flash flooding in the San Antonio area, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

The flooding began early Thursday morning when police and firefighters began receiving calls from motorists stranded on a Loop 410 frontage road, where 15 vehicles were swept away by water into a nearby creek.

Ten people were rescued from the area, with some clinging to trees about a mile from where they first entered the water.

SAFD said it eventually responded to more than 70 water rescues.

A record 6.11 inches of rain were recorded Thursday in San Antonio, including about 4 inches in the span of an hour, according to the National Weather Service.
