GRAPEVINE, TX — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott referenced the death penalty following the arrest of two undocumented immigrants involved in a fatal jet ski crash that killed 18-year-old Air Force cadet Ava Moore over Memorial Day weekend.
Abbott posted to social media, “Welcome to Texas… Here’s Your Death Penalty,” referencing the arrests of Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and Maikel Coello Perozo. Both are Venezuelan nationals and, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, were in the country illegally.
Moore, who had recently completed her first year at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, was kayaking at Grapevine Lake when she was struck by a jet ski near the shoreline of Oak Grove Park. Witnesses told police the jet ski had made several “reckless” passes along the shoreline before hitting Moore. She was pulled from the water with critical injuries and later died at the hospital.
According to authorities, Gonzalez was driving the jet ski. After the crash, she fled the scene with Perozo in a blue Toyota Corolla, which struck two vehicles as they left the area. Both suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday following a brief standoff.
Gonzalez has been charged with second-degree felony manslaughter and is being held on $500,000 bond. Perozo faces misdemeanor charges for hindering apprehension and for collision involving damage to a vehicle.
Moore, originally from North Texas, had been visiting family for the holiday weekend and was scheduled to begin basic training in the U.S. Air Force. She was remembered by military leaders and coaches as a dedicated leader with aspirations to one day become a four-star general.
