SAN ANGELO, TX — A tornado was confirmed on the ground near the Tom Green and Sterling county line, according to an alert issued by the National Weather Service at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19.
A tornado warning was issued for the "areas along the Tom Green County panhandle line north into southern Sterling County."
Residents of southern Sterling County were urged to take cover immediately.
The area in danger, about 35 miles northwest of San Angelo, is largely unpopulated with less than 60 residents, according to the post.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 3:30 p.m. for portions of Irion County, Sterling County and the panhandle of Tom Green County.
The storm has been producing tennis ball size hail as it moves into the western Concho Valley. The storms will slowly be moving farther east into the Concho Valley over the next several hours, according to the National Weather Service.
An updated alert was sent at 4:40 p.m. for a severe thunderstorm warning for areas in Tom Green County, along with the towns of Robert Lee and Sterling City. The area does not include San Angelo.
Hail larger than baseballs is now possible. Residents of extreme northern Tom Green County around Water Valley north into southern Coke County south of Robert Lee should take cover and avoid windows.
This is the storm that produced the confirmed tornado earlier, but the rotation has weakened, according to the National Weather Service.
