San Saba Police Chief Dies Suddenly

SAN SABA, TX — San Saba Chief of Police Steven B. Newkirk died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Friday, the San Saba Police Department announced.

“It is with profound sorrow that we share the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear friend, mentor, and leader—San Saba Chief of Police, Steven B. Newkirk. Chief Newkirk passed away at 03:47 this morning,” the announcement stated.

“Steve joined the San Saba Police Department in 2021 and quickly rose to the rank of Detective. In that role, he brought a spirit of positivity and growth that deeply influenced both the department and the community. When Chief Bauer stepped down, Steve once again stepped up, and in 2024, he was appointed Chief of Police.

“Under his steady and inspiring leadership, the department continued to thrive, moving forward with strength and unity. Steve was more than just a colleague—he was a true friend and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His absence leaves a profound void, but his impact and legacy will remain.

Newkirk was named San Saba’s Chief of Police just four months ago on Dec. 10, 2024.
