San Angelo Area Sees 86 Drilling Permits in February, Second Only to Midland

 

AUSTIN, TX – The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 665 original drilling permits in February, with the majority designated for new oil and gas wells.

Commission data shows 563 permits were issued for new oil or gas wells, while the remaining 102 included 11 for re-entering plugged wellbores, 16 for field transfers, and 75 for re-completions.

The breakdown of well types for total original drilling permits in February 2025 is: 105 oil, 34 gas, 487 oil and gas, 34 injection, and 5 other permits.

Midland led the state in oil and gas activity, receiving 295 drilling permits and recording 459 oil completions and 76 gas completions. The San Angelo area followed with 86 permits and 55 oil completions. The San Antonio region secured 77 permits and reported 70 oil completions.

Statewide, Commission staff processed 1,239 oil completions, 305 gas completions, and 395 injection well completions in February.
