Texas Senate to Consider Full THC Ban

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Senate is set to consider a bill that would ban all forms of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick argues retailers are exploiting legal loopholes and selling dangerous products.

Senate Bill 3, backed by Patrick, targets unregulated THC products currently sold in stores across Texas. The bill follows concerns that the 2019 Hemp Farming Act, which legalized hemp products with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC, has led to the growth of intoxicating substances. Patrick claims these products are being marketed toward children.

A survey by the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston found that while Texans broadly support marijuana reform, opinions on THC bans are divided.

  • 69% support decriminalizing marijuana possession.
  • 62% favor legalizing recreational marijuana.
  • 79% back medical marijuana with a prescription.

However, 61% of Republicans, 70% of Gen Z, and 48% of Democrats support banning THC consumables.

The Senate State Affairs Committee will review the bill, weighing its potential impact on businesses and consumers before lawmakers decide on its fate.
