PECOS, TX — A nonprofit that operated a West Texas overflow facility for migrant children has had its contract terminated, the Department of Government Efficiency announced on X.
The facility in Pecos largely sat empty while the nonprofit, Family Endeavors, was paid millions each month, the DOGE social media post stated.
A former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employee and Biden transition team member joined Family Endeavors in early 2021 and helped secure a sole-source HHS contract for overflow housing from licensed care facilities, according to DOGE.
As a result, Family Endeavors’ cash and portfolio of investments grew from $8.3 million in 2020 to $520.4 million in 2023.
Since March 2024, Health and Human Services has paid about $18 million per month to keep the facility open despite it sitting empty.
The Pecos Migrant Facility opened in March 2021 to “ensure that unaccompanied migrant children are safe and unified with family members or other suitable sponsors as quickly and safely as possible.”
The facility was reportedly going to house about 500 children and stated it could expand to house up to 2,000 children while providing them with medical care, along with educational and recreational activities among other services.
