Borger School Drop-Off Accident Claims Life of Second Grader

BORGER, TX – A second-grade student at Gateway Elementary passed away Friday morning after an accident in the school’s drop-off zone.

According to a release from the Borger Police Department, at around 8 a.m. on Jan. 24, first responders were called to the scene after the child's coat got caught in a vehicle door as they were getting out.

Despite the presence of a senior school administrator who immediately attempted to intervene, the incident happened so quickly that it could not be stopped, said the release.

Emergency crews took the child to Golden Plains Community Hospital, where they continued life-saving measures, but unfortunately, the student passed away from their injuries.

BISD announced that students at Gateway Elementary were released to their parents at 10 a.m., and buses would also run.

The accident is still under investigation.
