Lower Crawfish Prices Expected, But Supply Could Be Limited

SAN ANGELO, TX — Crawfish enthusiasts may find prices lower this year, but supply could be tight as the season begins.

Live crawfish prices are expected to start at $5.50 to $6.50 per pound, about half the cost compared to last year’s prices, which peaked at $12 to $13 per pound due to drought conditions.

According to reports, the recent rains have improved harvest conditions. However, cold weather in the coming weeks may make crawfish harder to catch, potentially leading to a supply shortage early in the season.

Crawfish season in Texas typically runs from January to July, with peak availability from March to May when the crustaceans are at their largest.

For newcomers to crawfish boils, the traditional way to eat them involves twisting and pulling off the head, peeling the tail, and pinching out the meat with fingers or teeth.
