AAA: Exercise Caution To Prevent Parking Lot Crashes, Theft

SAN ANGELO, TX - More shoppers, earlier sunsets, distractions, and thieves can make parking lots risky places to be during the holiday season.

That is why AAA Texas reminds drivers about the hazards in parking lots this time of year and urges shoppers to take simple steps to prevent crashes and auto burglaries.

“Stay focused, pay attention and be aware of all the hazards in crowded parking lots this holiday season,” said AAA Texas Corporate Communications Manager Doug Shupe. “A moment of distraction or poor judgment by shoppers in a rush can lead to unfortunate situations during what should be a festive time of year.”

When collisions occur in parking lots, they can often lead to expensive insurance claims for vehicle damage, and even worse, injuries if a pedestrian is hit. Distractions lead to most crashes and include talking to passengers, cell phones, the radio, or simply having tunnel vision looking for a parking spot.

In the last five years, auto repair costs have increased by as much as 50 percent, according to AAA Texas claims data. While many people consider parking lot crashes minor, modern vehicle bumpers contain complex cameras and sensors which can be damaged in in low-speed crashes and may also require recalibration for the vehicle to safely return to the road. Recalibration alone can cost hundreds of dollars.

To avoid a parking lot crash, AAA Texas warns drivers to:

  • Be aware of people, small children and vehicles in motion
  • Drive slowly and obey all traffic signs
  • Do not cut across parking lanes or rows of parking spots
  • Turn on headlights, even in the daylight, and especially when driving through dark parking garages
  • Be sure to exchange insurance information at the scene of any collision

To prevent crimes of opportunity this season, AAA Texas reminds drivers to:

  • Always lock car doors and close windows
  • Do not leave the vehicle running any time without the driver present
  • Never leave belongings or purchases in view from the outside of the vehicle
  • Park in populated, well-lit areas
  • Never hide a spare ignition key on the vehicle.

Remember, thieves may watch for shoppers who attempt to hide valuables in their vehicles or trucks. Hiding gifts and other valuables is a good strategy but try to be subtle and be aware of those who may be watching.
