AUSTIN, TX - Texas topped the nation in 2023 for in-state moves, with more than 3.3 million residents relocating within the Lone Star State, according to a new study by Texas Realtors using U.S. Census data.
This figure accounts for over 11% of Texas’s population, making it the largest volume of in-state movers nationwide.
The study also highlighted Texas as a popular destination for out-of-state relocations, with the state drawing 8.1% of all interstate moves in the U.S., second only to Florida’s 8.4%. Overall, Texas experienced a net population increase of more than 133,000 people due to state-to-state moves last year.
A large portion of Texas’s net migration came from California, with more than 55,000 people moving from California to Texas in 2023. This marks the largest net gain for Texas from any state. Florida ranked second, contributing a net gain of approximately 13,000 residents to Texas.
Despite these gains, Texas saw some migration to other states, with California being the top destination for Texans leaving the state. Colorado and North Carolina were also notable as states that drew more Texans than they sent to Texas.
Moving trends across the U.S. declined slightly in 2023.
