One of North America’s Largest Solar Farms Rising in West Texas

ABILENE, TX - The 815-megawatt Sequoia Solar project, under construction about 150 miles west of Dallas, is set to become one of North America’s largest photovoltaic power facilities.

Developed by Enbridge, an energy company based in Calgary, Alberta, the $1.1 billion project will go live in two phases, with the first 400 megawatts operational by late 2025 and the remaining by 2026.

Toyota and AT&T have signed long-term virtual power purchase agreements for most of the energy generated. The site spans 8,000 acres and was originally planned as a wind energy project. However, its proximity to Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene — it sits about 35 miles away — posed challenges with air rights for wind turbines, leading developers to pivot to solar energy.

Construction is being managed by Rosendin Electric, with components sourced globally. Despite its scale, the project does not currently include long-term energy storage, as most of its energy will be sold under virtual agreements and not consumed locally.
