ABILENE, TX— A baby giraffe at the Abilene Zoo has died.

In a Facebook post, the Abilene Zoo announced that the baby giraffe, Zahara, passed away after suffering a leg fracture.

The post reads:

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved baby giraffe, Zahara.

She passed away this morning after suffering a severe leg fracture, the cause of the injury is undetermined. In the process of giving her emergency care and despite the strong efforts of our medical team, Zahara passed away.

Born in July to Malaika and Congo, Zahara quickly captured the love of our zoo family and community. Our hearts go out to everyone who shared in her journey and voted for her beautiful name.

Zahara brought us so much joy in her short time with us, and she will be deeply missed.
