SAN ANGELO, TX — Texas ranks No. 1 in the United States for fall and winter weather-related property damage, with losses predicted to exceed $56.9 million this season.
In the past year alone, severe weather caused over $67 million in damage nationwide, and since 2014, this number has soared to more than $2.5 billion.
As colder months approach, experts are urging homeowners to prepare for extreme conditions.
Peter Duncanson, a disaster recovery and preparedness specialist with ServiceMaster Restore, shared tips to avoid common safety mistakes.
Among the top mistakes are not packing the right winter gear, using generators indoors, skipping emergency supplies, forgetting to protect pipes from freezing, and leaving pets or livestock outside in extreme cold.
Duncanson recommends stocking up on non-perishable food, water, heating fuel, and ensuring outdoor animals have access to non-frozen water and shelter.
