AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Department of Transportation has issued a warning to drivers about a new scam targeting users of toll roads in Texas.
According to TxDOT, scammers are sending text messages pretending to be from TXTag, a system used to collect tolls electronically, claiming drivers have unpaid balances or missed payments.
TxDOT clarified that it does not send texts regarding payment issues. Instead, any official text communication from TXTag will come from the number 22498 and will not concern payments. Reports of these phishing text messages, also known as “smishing,” have increased since April, with scammers directing users to fraudulent websites.
Smishing is a social engineering attack using fake text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals.
Drivers are advised to ignore unsolicited texts, emails, or messages asking for payment or other sensitive information. TxDOT recommends contacting TXTag directly through official channels, such as their website or customer service hotline, to verify account details.
For those who believe they have received a fraudulent message, the FBI encourages victims to file a complaint through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov.
