AUSTIN, TX – Texans could see an increase in the cost of Mega Millions tickets starting in 2025, as the Texas Lottery Commission plans to implement changes to align with recently adopted national guidelines.
Documents from the Texas Lottery Commission reveal that ticket prices could rise from $2 to $5 per ticket. The changes will also alter the number of available numbers for the Mega Ball, remove the Megaplier and Just the Jackpot features, and introduce new gameplay elements designed to generate more interest.
These modifications follow discussions initiated in 2022 when Mega Millions officials began considering price adjustments and game restructuring to maintain competitiveness with Powerball while preserving the uniqueness of Mega Millions.
The new rules are set to take effect on April 8, 2025, with the final drawing under the current rules scheduled for April 5, 2025. The changes are expected to generate larger jackpots and improve winning odds through better odds and new multiplier features that could increase non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times.
Texas Lottery Controller Sergio Rey stated that the rule changes are not anticipated to have a significant fiscal impact on state or local governments. Moreover, no adverse effects on small businesses, rural communities, or employment are expected.
