ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department K9 officers secured multiple accolades at the United States Police Canine Association Region 25 certifications this summer in Wichita Falls, TX.
Among the honors for APD K9 teams, K9 Barco and partner Officer Cox were recognized as top 20 out of nearly 60 narcotics canines in the National Competition, and they secured first place in tracking for the region.
K9 Rip and partner Officer Squyres earned first place in the patrol dog category, first place in evidence and detection, and were named Top Dog for the region.
Each Abilene Police Department K9 team obtained the Regional Narcotics Certification.
The teams are nationally certified in patrol, tracking, and narcotics, information stated. The National Competition featured 87 K9 teams, while 35 participated in the Regional Competition.
The department also introduced its newest K9 member, Panzer, a 16-month-old male Belgian Malinois. Panzer, who was born in Denmark and acquired through Southern State Canine for $14,500 using seized funds, is partnered with Officer Jacob Kartchner.
The team completed a six-week training program and is now active on the streets of Abilene.
