Scurry County Judge Declares Disaster After Earthquakes

SNYDER, TX — After six more earthquakes were recorded in his county Friday morning, Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks has issued a disaster declaration and requested assistance from the State of Texas.

There have been 61 earthquakes in Scurry County over the past seven days, Hicks said, causing damage to businesses and residences throughout the county.

Snyder is the county seat of Scurry County.

Friday's first earthquake at 9:28 a.m. about eight miles northeast of Hermleigh registered a 5.1 on the Richter scale, making it the sixth-strongest earthquake ever recorded in Texas.

There were reports across the San Angelo area of residents who felt Friday morning's earthquake, along with one that registered as a 4.9 on Monday night.

The strongest recorded earthquake in the state was 5.8 outside the far West Texas town of Valentine in 1931.

The area of Scurry County where the earthquakes are occurring is about 100 miles northwest of San Angelo.
