BELLS, TX — A Texas family is witnessing a “miraculous recovery” after their infant son, given a 5% chance to live, survived a fatal car crash that claimed the life of his grandmother.
The crash happened on June 12 at the intersection of U.S. 69 and Denison Street. Bells police reported that a vehicle waiting to turn left was rear-ended by a pickup truck, pushing it into oncoming traffic, where it was struck by a semi-truck.
Angela Woodson, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 4-month-old grandson, Roman, was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Doctors initially gave Roman a slim chance of survival.
“Late at night on Wednesday, June 12, our dear family friend was rear-ended into oncoming traffic, causing a fatal accident for Angela Woodson," read a statement on the family’s GoFundMe page. "She was driving with her 4-month-old grandson, who is in critical condition in a Dallas hospital."
The family reported that Roman’s brain monitoring showed no seizures but little brain activity. They decided to remove his ventilator tube, preparing for the worst. Despite these grim circumstances, Roman made an astonishing recovery.
According to reports, doctors have no explanation as to how his recovery progressed this quickly or at all.
The crash has left a deep impact on the Bells community. A roadside memorial in Angela Woodson’s favorite color, purple, honors her memory. Angela, who co-owned Finish Line Pizza in Bells, is remembered fondly by family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Ashley, two children, two grandchildren, and her best friend, Lorry Burris.
A petition to reduce the speed limit on U.S. 69 by 30 mph has been initiated by community members in response to the tragic accident.
The GoFundMe campaign has raised $14,210 of its $25,000 goal to help cover funeral costs, hospital expenses, and other needs.
