AUSTIN, TX — Former San Angelo Police Officer Bruce James has been promoted to Assistant Chief of the Texas Highway Patrol (THP), the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced.
This promotion follows the retirement of Assistant Chief Justin Chrane, who served the department for nearly 30 years.
“For nearly three decades, Justin Chrane represented the best of the Texas Department of Public Safety, and we will be forever grateful for his service and dedication to protecting Texas,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “I have no doubt Bruce James will continue with the highest standards we’ve come to expect, and I look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes in this new role.”
Justin Chrane served the department for 27 years, beginning his career in January 1997 as a THP Trooper, with postings in Decatur, Terrell, and Austin. He climbed the ranks, serving as sergeant in Bastrop, lieutenant at the Capitol in 2006, captain and K-9 Coordinator in 2008, and major in El Paso in 2014. Chrane returned to Austin as an operational major and Executive Director of Operation Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort (CARE). He was promoted to Assistant Chief of the Texas Highway Patrol in March 2020. Chrane is a second-generation employee.
Bruce James started his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with the San Angelo Police Department (SAPD) in 1987. He worked in SAPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, focusing on child abuse and neglect investigations, and served as the hit-and-run investigator.
In 2000, James joined DPS, initially stationed in Ozona. He transitioned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) service in 2007 and was promoted to sergeant and lieutenant in 2008 and 2011, respectively. In 2014, he became a captain in Garland, later transferring to Weslaco and promoting to major in 2018. James joined the THP Chief’s Office at DPS headquarters in Austin in 2019. He received the DPS Purple Heart Citation in 2012 and graduated from the Texas DPS Command College in 2017.
His promotion to Assistant Chief became effective immediately.
James will continue to be stationed at DPS headquarters in Austin.
