SAN ANGELO, TX — Drivers in San Angelo are enjoying the lowest gas prices in Texas, with an average of $2.95 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The statewide average has dropped to $3.19 per gallon, down five cents from last week but up 11 cents from the same time last year.
In contrast, drivers in El Paso are paying the highest average price at $3.43 per gallon. Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $3.60, which is down four cents from last week but up seven cents from last year.
Gasoline demand has increased slightly week-to-week, and there has been a minimal decrease in supply, according to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration. Despite the current downward trend in fuel prices, fluctuations are possible throughout the end of May due to expected record travel volumes for Memorial Day weekend.
AAA forecasts that 3.6 million Texans will travel for Memorial Day, the highest number on record. Of these, 3.1 million are expected to drive, also setting a new record.
“Fuel prices are in a downward trend, at least for now, heading into one of the busiest holiday travel periods of the year,” said Daniel Armbruster, a spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Gas prices may fluctuate through the end of May with record travel anticipated for Memorial Day in Texas.”
