SAN ANGELO, TX — The Texas Department of Transportation is bracing for a historic day. The solar eclipse on April 8 is expected to bring a moment of darkness and a heavy increase in traffic across the state.
“While the path of totality runs across twelve TxDOT districts, we could experience heavy traffic on all major roads throughout the state,” information from TxDOT states. “It’s predicted that up to 1 million visitors may travel into Texas’s path of totality to observe the eclipse.”
The information continues, stating that the men and women of TxDOT have been preparing for this astronomical event for over a year.
“All 25 of our districts and our Maintenance Division have been hard at work leading response preparations, supported by the Communications, Travel Information, Traffic Safety, Fleet Operations, Support Services, Occupational Safety, and Construction divisions," the information reads. "We will activate the Emergency Operations Center before, during, and after the eclipse."
DriveTexas.org will also have the latest traffic and closure info.
According to TxDOT, Texas hasn’t seen a lunar event on this scale since 1878, before the invention of the automobile.
“As we prepare for this historic event, please know that TxDOT is going above and beyond in its efforts to ensure the safety of Texans and our visitors,” TxDOT stated.
