LUBBOCK— A former Lubbock firefighter who left a lifelong legacy for other Texas first responders has shockingly passed away.
Matt Dawson, a Lubbock firefighter that suffered traumatic injuries back in 2020, has died.
Back in January 2020, Dawson was one of the first responders who was called to a crash on North Interstate 27. He, along with Lieutenant Firefighter Eric Hill and Lubbock Police Officer Nicholas Reyna were hit by a pickup truck after it rolled over. Hill and Reyna were killed and Dawson suffered long term disabilities and brain damage.

I cannot believe I am making this post, but word is getting out, so I wanted to let you all know that Matt has unexpectedly passed away. P and I are unfortunately out of town and making our way back. We do not have any answers at this time and just ask for prayers during this extremely difficult time. He fought like Hell these last four years and will be missed more than words can ever describe. #DawsonStrongForever
In April 2022, Dawson retired from the Lubbock Fire Department and left behind a legacy that will help every first responder should they suffer a brain injury on the job. In June 2023, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the Matt Dawson Act into law.
Information regarding Dawson’s funeral service have not been released.
