UVALDE – The principal at Robb Elementary School has been placed on paid leave by the school board.
Mandy Gutierrez, the principal at Robb Elementary, has been placed on administrative leave with pay by Uvalde CISD Superintendent Hal Harrell. The news was confirmed by Gutierrez's attorney Ricardo G. Cedillo.
On May 24, 2022, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos entered the elementary school with a long gun and killed 19 students and 2 teachers. The Robb Elementary tragedy garnered national attention and brought up many issues including gun control.
The Texas House Committee put together an investigative report where Gutierrez testified that leaders among the school staff knew about locking issues with the classroom doors prior to the tragedy. In the report, Gutierrez confirmed that the administration knew about the issues and reported it at spring break of this year.
Pete Arredondo, the school district’s police chief, was put on leave June 22, 2022.
Security footage from a hallway inside Robb Elementary where law enforcement stood around was leaked to the public. In the footage, Ramos is seen walking down a hallway and three minutes later, police entered. Ramos entered the school at 11:33 a.m. and was killed by officers at 12:50 p.m.
