WICHITA FALLS, TX –– A Wichita Falls family is searching for answers after learning they have been grieving the loss of their father at the wrong plot.
According to a local news source, the York family laid Ernie York to rest in 1997. The mix-up came to light after the family requested their stepmother be laid to rest next to her husband. It was then the cemetery realized Mr.York had been buried in a different location.
According to Kristen York, she became aware of the issue when the cemetery called and asked her to sign paperwork to correct the issue of her father's final resting spot.
“So this whole time going out to the cemetery, you know, was he there? Was he not there? Like knowing that he’s in the wrong spot, was I visiting an empty spot?" said York.
But even the explanation given to the family has not cleared up the mix-up.
“Basically what they said was whoever did the map screwed up and they put him in the wrong spot," said York. "And ‘I wish that I could tell you more but we’re not the ones who did it. I’m not really sure who did but we need to get this paper signed so we can get him in the correct spot."
While the issue has been resolved and her father and stepmother have been laid to rest in accordance with their wishes, York hopes no family ever has to deal with this problem.
"It’s not right. I hope nobody ever has to deal with this," said York. "I hope nobody ever has to deal with this again."
