Big Bend National Park Opens Trails After Major Wildfire

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, TX – Big Bend National Park reopened some of the trails today.

The South Rim Fire burned just over 1,300 acres though the mountains and forced the park to close for nearly two months.

“After seven weeks of closures, we are glad to be able to safely open up access to the Chisos Mountains trail system, so hikers can enjoy many of the park’s highlights, including the South Rim and Emory Peak,” a press release from Park Superintendent, Bob Krumenaker.

The trails that reopened are:

  • Pinnacles Trail
  • Emory Peak Trail
  • South Rim Trail
  • Boot Canyon Trail
  • Colima Trail

When the Peregrine Falcon Nesting Closure lifts on June 1st, the East Rim Trail will open. The Juniper Canyon area will remain closed for hot spots.

Park advisers ask visitors to remain aware when walking the trails as tree limbs may fall due to the fires.
