BIG SPRING, TX – Drama continues in the Big Spring City Council after several members of the media received a fake letter stating a number of members were about to join the mayor in an upcoming recall election.
According to CBS7, on August 19, a public service announcement was sent out to all members of the media stating on Thursday, June 25, 2020, an affidavit was filed with the office of the City Secretatry requesting issuance of petitions for the recall of City Council Member Camilla Strande of Dristrict 5 and Council member Jim DePauw of District 6. The recall process is outlined in Article XI of the Big Spring City Charter. For more information contact Donald Moore at 432-264-2517.
After hearing of the notice Council Member Camilla Strande told CBS7 that the letter was false.
“Don says he knew nothing of it,” she said. “I’ve seen the emails that he sent out that were released in the open records request to KBEST. He said that he didn’t know anything about it, wasn’t aware of it before it was sent out, didn’t see it until it was sent out and didn’t have anything to do with writing it.”
Strande claims the city employee who actually wrote the PSA, told her Mayor Thomason dictated it to her and told her to send it under Moore’s name.
Impersonating a public official is a felony. Other charges that could be brought up is electioneering which is a class a misdemeanor.
Mayor Thomason refused to comment to CBS 7 on the issue. A recall election for his seat is scheduled later this year.
