Midland Airport Cancels All Flights Due to Extreme Winter Weather

MIDLAND, TX – Extreme winter weather conditions continues to impact cities all across West Texas. In Midland, air travel has been suspended until Thursday evening.

According to CBS7, the city announced that Midland International Air & Space Port will be closed to air traffic. Per the city, the closure is due to operational and safety considerations for passengers, aircraft, and employees. MAF has over 20 daily departures with non-stop service to DFW and Dallas Love Field, Houston Intercontinental, Houston Hobby, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Denver.

The Midland International Air and Space Port is experiencing very low visibility and light snow. The weather report at 11 a.m. showed the visibility at only 3/4 statute miles with a ceiling of 1200 feet above ground level (AGL). The forecast through most of the afternoon is for 1/2 mile visibility and 300 feet AGL ceilings. By nightfall, aviation weather forecasts show Midland to return to Visual Flight Rules or VFR.

Aircraft flying into and out of Midland may encounter icing low to the ground. The FAA issued a warning to pilots about icing from 2,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level in areas west of Midland and moderate turbulence over Texas, Oklahoma, and most of the southeastern US where the airliners fly, from 18,000 feet MSL to 39,000 feet MSL. Light mixed icing has been reported by pilots south of Midland in the Fort Stockton area the morning of Feb. 5, 2020.
