Infant Killed in Odessa Fire, Cause Still Unknown

ODESSA, TEXAS – Two weeks ago, a deadly fire took the life of one infant and severely injured the infant's father. Today, the cause is still unknown.

Two Sundays ago, Odessa firefighters and Fire & Rescue responded to the 1400 block of Lauderdale Avenue in Odessa where they found a man trying to put out a fire inside a house, reported local news station CBS7.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire within 10 minutes. Unfortunately, a 9-month-old baby inside at the time did not survive. The baby’s father was airlifted to Lubbock, Texas in critical condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

Two other children were living in the house, but were not home at the time of the fire. The Odessa Fire Marshal’s office has said "they cannot rule out any combustibles close to a heat source.” Those could include a space heater, an extension cord or children playing with a space heater.

The fire is still under investigation.
