Get Ready For 39th Annual Miles Cotton Festival

SAN ANGELO, TX - This coming weekend, families looking for something to do can enjoy the 39th annual Miles Cotton Festival. Miles is about 17 miles east of San Angelo, and the event is free to the public.

Friday evening, Sept. 9, events like a drink mix-off and salsa contest will be held for anyone to compete in. Saturday morning, Sept. 10, a margarita mix-off will be held in conjunction with the cook-off.

Since alcoholic drinks will be available for the public to consume, having a designated driver is highly recommended if people choose to drink.

Paula Rankin, president of the Cotton Fest, said, "We don't [have transportation]. Before, people have actually hired their own [drivers] to come pick them up and take them back. There's a cab thing that's like a bus. We've had people come out in limos and all kinds of stuff."

Overall, the annual cook-off for the Cotton Fest is a big deal. As of now, there is a waiting list for people to be able to participate in the cook-off, but members from the public can sign up to be judges.

Rankin said, “Last year, we had over 130 cooking teams.”

Events for Saturday will kick off at 10:00 a.m. with one of the largest parades around. Rankin explained that on a good year, public attendance for the Cotton Fest can reach up to 5,000 people.

“Last year, we had over 100 vendors in the park. [Some were] art and crafts and food vendors,” Rankin added. “Come out and enjoy the day; it’s kind of a family deal. There will be Entertainment in the Park Saturday afternoon, and all day long, it will be a fun deal.”

Entertainment in the Park will begin at noon and continue until 6:00 p.m.

A Kid’s Fair will be available for children during the festival as well. Bounce houses (wet and dry) and other fun activities will be held in the park for children. A wrist band can be purchased for the kids to play all day long.

Other events that will be held on Saturday include:

  • Pancake Breakfast: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Weatherby Hall
  • Cotton Stalk Contest: 9:00 a.m. at the Show Barn
  • Arts/Crafts Food Booths: 9:00 a.m. to close at City Park
  • Washer Pitching Tournament: Sign up at 10:00 a.m.
  • Queen’s Contest: 6:30 p.m. at City Park
