A press release from the Abilene Police Department stated that from June 24 to July 5, 2016, the APD participated in TxDOT’s Impaired Driver Mobilization (IDM) Program. They deployed dedicated DWI patrols on the streets of Abilene.
These DWI patrols consisted of officers working in an overtime capacity and were dedicated to the detection and apprehension of DWI offenders. This effort is funded by a grant in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation.
During the IDM, officers completed 12 shifts resulting in 5 DWI arrests. Regular duty patrol officers also arrested 13 DWIs, bringing the holiday total for DWI arrests to 18.
APD reminds its citizens that DWI is a 100 percent preventable crime. Officers encourage drinkers to utilize a designated driver, call a cab, or call a friend. They also can take advantage of TxDOT’s website SoberRides.org, which lists ride options in areas throughout Texas.
