News this morning of a grenade found in Midland caused quite a stir, and a lockdown of Bunche Elementary was put in place immediately. Additionally, since reports of the incident came out, Midland Police were able to safely detonate the grenade.
According to a news site in the area, authorities said they received a call from a citizen about a suspicious object in a vacant lot near the intersection of Lamesa Road and New York Street. The citizen took a closer look, picked up the object and put it back down.
Based on the description of the objet, a two block perimeter was evacuated and nearby Bunche Elementary was placed on lockdown.
City of Midland employee Sara Bustilloz said a rusty internal component of the grenade kept it from detonating. The grenade did have a live charge, but it wasn’t as unstable as a newer grenade.
Currently, police are unsure how the grenade got there, but they don’t suspect it was intentionally placed. No arrests have been made, nor are there any leads in connection with this incident.
