Lake View Chiefs Round Out Regular Season on the Road

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs (4-5, 1-1 in district) travel to Midland on Friday to face Midland Greenwood (5-4, 2-0 in district) in a regular-season finale with playoff seeding and a share of the district title on the line.

The Chiefs come off a massive victory over the Andrews Mustangs, 31-22, in the rain at San Angelo Stadium last Thursday in a game where, despite the weather, quarterback Chris Alvizo and wide receiver Gabe Alvarez popped off in the passing game to secure a win.

"That win definitely meant a lot to the kids, especially for the seniors going out this year," head coach Hector Guevara said at his weekly press conference on Monday. "It was a great win."

It was the first time in 20 meetings that the Chiefs took down Andrews, and the perfect time for Lake View to correct a four-game skid.

With the win, the Chiefs now have a shot at a share of the district title against a very tough Midland Greenwood team that has so far cruised through district play. The Rangers handled Andrews 45-7 two weeks ago and beat Plainview 47-21 last week.

On paper, Greenwood's 5-4 record is deceiving at best. This season, the Rangers loaded up their schedule with multiple tough opponents, including the defending 3A Division II state champion Wall Hawks and the 6A Central Bobcats. While Greenwood lost both of those matchups, the Rangers proved competitive in both. Lake View will have its hands full in a hostile atmosphere on Friday night.

"Our coaches have done a great job creating schemes offensively and defensively this week," Guevara continued. "We just need to get out there and execute."

Stopping Greenwood's offense will be difficult, but possible. The Rangers like to chuck the football all over the field and have several pass-catchers that are dynamic in the open field. The Chiefs need to find a way to create pressure so the defensive backs have the chance to be ball hawks.

On offense, Alvizo should find success through the air. Alvarez stepped up last week with four touchdown receptions and will need to be ready for a similar performance if Lake View wants to bring home another win.

If Lake View loses, the Chiefs will likely have to settle for the district's No. 3 seed heading into the playoffs next week, which will give them a first-round draw against the runner-up from District 4-4A.

Kickoff for Friday's matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. at J.M. King Memorial Stadium in Midland.
