Lake View Chiefs Seek First District Win at Home Against Andrews

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs (3-5)(0-1) look to get back to their winning ways on Friday when the Andrews Mustangs head to town.

Last week, Lake View fell behind early to a talented Plainview team and ultimately dropped the Chiefs' district opener 41-13.

"Obviously, we could have played better," head coach Hector Guevara said at his weekly press conference on Monday. "We started off slow, and defensively, we just could not slow them down—offensively, we made some good plays, but we could not sustain a drive. Give credit to Plainview. They have some good athletes and played well all around in all three phases of the game."

Lake View found themselves without three of their best offensive weapons a week ago in wide receivers Andrew Young, Chris Rodela and running back Aiden Rivera. Injury concerns aside, Lake View turned the ball over and, after a slow start, did not make enough plays to keep up with the opportunistic Plainview Bulldogs.

The Chiefs have a chance to fight back on Thursday when they host Andrews. The Mustangs have been a thorn in the Chiefs' side for a while now. Andrews beat Lake View last season in the de facto district championship game, 36-28.

"I want this to be a rivalry, but we have to beat them," Guevara said of the Mustangs. "To do that, we have to play really well. They have a good ball club. So, we have to be ready to play on Thursday. Our kids are working hard, so hopefully it will be a good game."

Lake View looks to get revenge this week.

Andrews is in a different position than it was a year ago. They are also sitting at 3-5 and 0-1 in district after falling to Midland Greenwood last week, 45-7. Coach Guevara said that the Mustangs' record is deceiving because of the level of competition that Andrews has played so far this year and expects another tough matchup for the Chiefs.

Andrews is primarily a run-focused team with over 1000 rushing yards this season. The Mustangs can throw the ball, although they seem to use the pass in more opportunistic situations. Andrews is led on the ground by senior running back Blas Hernandez. He has 529 yards this season on 115 carries, but multiple Mustangs contribute to the ground game.

Lake View's ballhawk secondary has a chance to tilt the momentum in the Chiefs' favor on Thursday. In the passing game, Andrew's Collin Kelley has thrown 11 interceptions this season to only four touchdowns. Lake View will need as many opportunities for the offense as possible to help the Chiefs' chances at claiming their first district victory.

Kickoff in Thursday's matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
