Lake View Hungry for a Win Against Pecos Friday

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs suffered their first loss of 2026 at the hands of Lubbock High last week, 37-13.

The Chiefs put themselves in a 17-0 hole early before battling back to within four points, 17-13, early in the fourth quarter. However, mental mistakes and turnovers ultimately doomed the Chiefs. Lubbock High took advantage of the chances in front of them to put Lake View away in the end.

"I definitely did not like how we started the ball game," head coach Hector Guevara said at his weekly press conference on Monday. "We put ourselves in a bind with a quick turnover early in the game. Lubbock High took advantage of it, but I liked how our kids did not give up. They fought back into the game."

Despite the loss, Guevara said that the Chiefs' sights are now set on their homecoming game against Pecos. A win here would go far to repairing some of that confidence Lake View may have lost against the Westerners.

Pecos currently sits undefeated (3-0) this season after wins over El Paso Horizon, Fort Worth Western Hills, and Fabens. While it is tough to get a read on how good those programs are, undefeated is still undefeated at the end of the day, and the Chiefs will have their work cut out for them on Friday.

"Just like always, Pecos has a big ol' offensive and defensive line," Guevara said. "They are very physical. They have a talented running back, and the quarterback does a good job of distributing the ball to his receivers. So, it will be a good matchup."

Last season, Lake View survived a lengthy weather delay to defeat Pecos on the road, 42-14.

If the Chiefs can regroup and reset, Lake View is fully capable of producing a similar result this weekend.

One factor that held the Chiefs back last week was the amount of time quarterback Chris Alvizo had in the pocket to throw the ball. That lack of time equated to incompletions and interceptions. The Chiefs need to do a better job at protecting Alvizo if Lake View wants to take down Pecos.

"I thought he had a pretty good game even though we did not give him enough time to throw the ball," Guevara said. "Lubbock had some fast d-linemen, and it put us in a bind quickly. We can recover."

Alvizo continues to prove time and time again this season that if he has the time, the Chiefs are deadly through the air.

Kickoff in Friday's matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
