Central HC Mark Smith Speaks During the Bobcats' Bye Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Central Bobcats (3-2) do not have a game in Week 6 due to their scheduled bye week. Head coach Mark Smith held a press conference Monday, Sept. 29, to discuss last week's 48-6 win over Waco, the upcoming opening district matchup against Midland Legacy, and the Bobcats' season so far.

In the win against Waco, the Cats' offense continues to hum incredibly effectively. This was the third week in a row that the 'Cats managed more than 40 points in a game. While the offense was aided by a kickoff return touchdown from Gavin Johnson in the second quarter, the offense was still plenty effective against the Lions.

Quarterback Micah Smith once again displayed that he is taking steps forward. He continues to increase his passing efficiency and finished 17-of-26 with 189 yards and two touchdowns through the air. While those numbers might not jump off the page, Central's ground game took over in the second half. However, Smith's most important stat against Waco was the zero in the interception category.

Colton Hill and Jimmy Edwards gathered the lion's share of those 189 passing yards. Hill finished the contest with seven catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Edwards collected seven catches for a team-high 91 receiving yards.

The three-headed monster that is the Bobcats' rushing attack continues to be a problem for opposing defenses. This is one area of the game that will carry the Bobcats through district play. Zey Johnson once again led the way for the Bobcats and has all but cemented himself as Central's No. 1 option in the backfield. The young man finished the contest with 18 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Elijah Allen added 12 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. Finally, Darius Huitt finished his night with seven carries for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Central will need its A game next week when the district starts. The matchup with Midland Legacy should be a good measuring stick on how far this team has come since the loss to Amarillo High in Week 2.

Kickoff in that matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at San Angelo Stadium.
