COVER 1: Bobcats' HC Mark Smith Talks Abilene High, Amarillo High

SAN ANGELO, TX — Central Bobcats' head coach, Mark Smith, held a press conference on Monday, Sept. 1, to discuss the 'Cats' opening loss to Abilene High last Friday night, and to preview Central's home opener against Amarillo High this weekend.

Despite the 42-21 loss, there are still several key areas where this Bobcats' squad should be commended. Defense was a strong point early and despite two explosive plays, Central held the No. 8-ranked team in 5A in check for most of the ballgame.

On offense, there are certainly multiple areas to improve on, but the rushing attack headed up by Zey Johnson (14 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown) and that stout Bobcats' offensive line should be something to watch down the road.

In the passing game, Micah Smith (13-of-23 passing for 68 yards and two interceptions) played a much more impressive second half after he shook off some early nerves and should be ready to let loose this weekend.

Amarillo High, like Abilene High, returns a full slate of veterans to the offense and defense this year. The Sandies return eight starters on offense, including quarterback Jett Lopez, who threw for 3,007 yards and 38 TDs last year, and 1,200-yard rusher Jude Dunavin. Amarillo also brings back seven starters on defense.

The Sandies dismantled Central's fellow District 2-6A member, Odessa High, last week, 55-12. This will be another tough, but necessary test for the Bobcats as they prepare for district play next month.

This was a wildly entertaining matchup last year. Central fell behind 48-14 in Amarillo before storming back to fall just short 48-45.

Kickoff this weekend is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at San Angelo Stadium.
