COVER1 Pregame | Sonora Broncos Look to Continue Dominate Run

SAN ANGELO— District play is underway and there are some really good games in the Concho Valley. Starting off with the big schools, Kevin Crane and the San Angelo Central Bobcats are taking on the Odessa High Broncos in Odessa. Then, the Lake View Chiefs are taking on the state ranked Brownwood Lions in Gordon Wood Stadium. Not far from Gordon Wood, the Brady Bulldogs are playing the Early Longhorns in Early.

The Sonora Broncos are tied up in a boxing match with the Reagan County Owls, a game which they lost last season. The Owls will look to march into Sonora and leave with the same result, something Jaime Buitron and Edgar DeLuna will look to stop.

Lastly, the Grape Creek Eagles are taking on the TLCA San Angelo Eagles in "The Battle of the Birds". TLCA San Angelo has the best record in San Angelo and will look to keep the best record against Grape Creek tonight.

Outside our coverage, there are some good 6-Man games being played tonight, the 7-0 Richland Springs Coyotes are taking on the 7-0 Rochelle Hornets and the 7-0 Veribest Falcons are playing the 6-1 Robert Lee Steers. The Eden Bulldogs are playing the Irion County Hornets the Eldorado Eagles are playing the McCamey Badgers.

The Wall Hawks are making a short trip to Ballinger to take on the Bearcats and the Christoval Cougars are playing the Ozona Lions. The Miles Bulldogs are looking to bounce back from a loss to Albany against the Hamlin Pied Pipers.

And, if you want to look outside the Concho Valley altogether, the Jim Ned Indians are playing the Clyde Bulldogs in Clyde. The Bulldogs are undefeated and the Indians have one loss this season.

SAN ANGELO CENTRAL @ ODESSA HIGH KICKOFF AT 7 P.M. ON 10/13

RYAN CHDWICK - The Central Bobcats enter another tough district matchup this week after falling to Midland High at home last weekend. Of all the Bobcats district opponents, the ‘Cats match up best with the Odessa High Bronchos. While the Bronchos are incredibly explosive this year on the offensive side of the ball, so are the Bobcats. This game will be an shoot out from start to finish and will come down to who has the ball last and who turns the ball over. If Central can snag one or two take aways, they have a chance to win. Odessa High is much improved from a year ago and defeated Odessa Permian in overtime last week. PICK: Central 49 Odessa High 45

MATT TRAMMELL - The Central Bobcats are going to have a tough one tonight. However it’ll be closer than most expect. Odessa may be coming off a huge win against Odessa Permian but they will have to stop Central who could score every possession. We may be seeing an overtime game here. PICK: Odessa 42 Central 35

JAMES BOULIGNY - The Central Bobcats are playing good football and putting up numbers, they just aren’t translating to points. They have a good opportunity to get a win here, but the Odessa Bronchos aren’t a pushover team. They beat the Permian Panthers last week and have played good teams this season so far. This young Central defense is going to have to stop a high-octane offense that starts with Mikey Cota, who threw for 404 yards and five scores against Mojo. A young receiver, sophomore Andrew Rodriguez, had 157 yards and two touchdowns last week. Cota has had a good season with 1699 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The receivers are the main threat against Central this week, but you can’t forget about running back DeJuan Green, who has over 700 yards and six scores. Central has good receivers as well in Colton Hill, Carmelo Amigelo, and Alex Lindsey. Central has an uphill battle to fight this week but I feel they come up just short. PICK: ODESSA 56 – CENTRAL 49

OTHER PICKS: SCOTT MENCHACA (25-8) - ODESSA | ERNESTO RODRIGUEZ (23-10) - ODESSA | YANTIS GREEN (22-11) - ODESSA | KIMBERLY MAJANO (18-15) - ODESSA  | ARLEEN CASTILLO -  CENTRAL |

LAKE VIEW (1-6) @ BROWNWOOD (6-1) AT 7 P.M. ON 10/13

BOULIGNY - The Brownwood Lions are coming off a huge win over the Big Spring Steers and Lake View is the next opponent. The Lions are ranked in the Top 10 taking on a Lake View team that is beat up. Expect the Lions to end this game early and the Chiefs just need to focus on fundamental football. PICK: BROWNWOOD 63 – LAKE VIEW 7

TRAMMELL - Well Chiefs fans another week another extremely tough matchup. On top of being short handed, the chiefs have to play a Brownwood team who is ranked and looking to take home a district championship this year. Last week Andrews put up a school record in rushing yards. We may see the same thing tonight for Brownwood. PICK: BROWNWOOD - 55 LAKE VIEW 0

CHADWICK - Our Lake View Chiefs had a rough outing against a tough Andrews squad last week at San Angelo Stadium. Wild as it is, the Chiefs’ schedule just gets harder from there. Brownwood is ranked in the Top 10 in 4A and are just too much for Lake View to handle. I’d like to see the Chiefs control the clock, extend drives, and give their defense more of a break than they did a week ago. Lake View is capable of being explosive on offense when things are clicking. PICK: BROWNWOOD 56 LAKE VIEW 28

OTHER PICKS: MENCHACA - BROWNWOOD | RODRIGUEZ - LAKE VIEW | GREEN - BROWNWOOD | MAJANO - LAKE VIEW | CASTILLO - BROWNWOOD  |

BRADY (2-4) @ EARLY (2-4) AT 7 P.M. ON 10/13

BOULIGNY - The Brady Bulldogs beat the TLCA San Angelo Eagles to open district last week that probably surpised a lot of people, not me. Brady returned several players from injury but still had one off the field in linebacker Johnny Menefield, who will make a difference on the field. Quarterback Sean Jacoby was good enough at quarterback, going 7-11 for 112 yards and one score. On the ground, the duo of Dash and Bash, Zeke Jones and Daryl Adair, had themselves a game, combining for 244 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

The Bulldogs are going to have to focus on stopping run as Early running back Griffin Cheslock had 17 carries for 114 yards and 3 scores. The young Bulldog defense will have to focus on him so DeMarcus Reed, Xavier Mendez, and Gauge Evans will have to be ready. PICK: BRADY 32 – EARLY 28

CHADWICK - The Bulldogs picked up a dominant and much needed district win over the TLCA Eagles a week ago. It seems like Brady is almost fully healthy and ready to roll. Bad news for Bulldogs fans, however. Early is also getting healthier every week and the Longhorns might be the team we thought they were in the preseason. This one is close but I’m rocking with Early this week. PICK: EARLY 35 BRADY 27

TRAMMELL - The Brady Bulldogs have played a tough schedule all year hence the the 2-4 record. With those tough games the dealt with injuries. Now however the Bulldogs are healthy and ready to roll. Expect this game to get out of hand early with Zeke Jones leading the way. PICK: BRADY 28 - EARLY 12

OTHER PICKS: MENCHACA - BRADY | RODRIGUEZ - EARLY | GREEN - EARLY | MAJANO - BRADY | CASTILLO - EARLY |

GRAPE CREEK (0-6) @ TLCA SAN ANGELO (3-3) KICKOFF AT 7 P.M. ON 10/13

TRAMMELL - Not much to say about this one. The TLCA Eagles have the best team they’ve had in years and Grape Creek well they are still looking for their first win. Sorry Eagles fans it won’t be happening tonight. PICK: TLCA 35 - GRAPE CREEK 6

BOULIGNY -The Battle of the Birds is taking off tonight when the Grape Creek Eagles take on the TLCA San Angelo Eagles. TLCA has the best record in San Angelo and will take it to Grape Creek tonight. Expect TLCA San Angelo quarterback Layne Honea to have a night. PICK: TLCA SAN ANGELO 42 – GRAPE CREEK 14

CHADWICK - The Eagles took a butt whooping from the Brady Bulldogs last week. The Coaching staff at TLCA say that the Eagles will continue to improve as the season progresses and I agree with them. Grape Creek is slowly putting things together, but Layne Honea, Jaidden Villanueva, and Natavian Sykes will prove too much for Grape Creek. I’m rocking with the Eagles from San Angelo. PICK: TLCA 42 GRAPE CREEK 14

OTHER PICKS: MENCHACA - TLCA | RODRIGUEZ - TLCA | GREEN - TLCA | MAJANO - TLCA| CASTILLO - TLCA |

REAGAN COUNTY (4-2) @ SONORA (6-0) KICKOFF AT 7 P.M.

CHADWICK - In one of the most interesting matchups of the week, the Reagan County Owls make their way down to Sonora for what should be an electrifying football game. Reagan County has one of the most explosive offenses in the district when everything is clicking, but this Sonora team is a mechanical monster. Edgar Deluna continues to churn out 250+ yard games and will eventually find himself on a couple of All-State lists at the end of the year. Couple that with the resurgence of Jaime Buitron and the Broncos should win this one. PICK: SONORA 35 REAGAN COUNTY 21

BOULIGNY -The undefeated Sonora Broncos are taking on Reagan County in Sonora. This is a game Sonora lost last season but this year, the Broncos have Edgar DeLuna running the ball. Quarterback Jaime Buitron, who was injured in two-a-days, is back and in two games has five touchdown passes to no interceptions. Sonora gets is done on the ground. Wideout Kam Aguero leads the receivers.

DeLuna is a do it all linebacker has 79 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and four forced fumbles, which all lead the team. Cason Boggs, Dailen Luna, Logan Mayfield, Josh Lozano, Eli Pruneda, and Tristan Ford all contribute on defense.

Kason Brown, Reagan County’s quarterback, has 1,348 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. Brown leads the team in rushing but has AJ Avalos to take the pressure off of him. The Owls have five receivers who have over 100 yards and Raymond Saldibar had 500 yards himself. The Broncos are on a mission this season. PICK: SONORA 35 – REAGAN COUNTY 31

TRAMMELLThe Sonora Broncos have district champion aspirations. However this matchup won’t be a cake walk. Reagan County knows how to put up big numbers and last year they won this matchup. Despite that Sonora’s Edgar Deluna is having a monster year and they now have the 2022 Cover1 Offensive MVP Jaime Buitron back on the field. It will be competitive but this is going to be another win for Sonrora. PICK: SONORA 24 REAGAN COUNTY 21

OTHER PICKS: MENCHACA - SONORA | RODRIGUEZ - SONORA  | GREEN - SONORA | MAJANO - REAGAN COUNTY | CASTILLO -  SONORA
