Central Bobcats' Jacob English Commits to Angelo State
SAN ANGELO, TX — Another San Angelo Central Bobcat accepted an offer to compete at the next level. Bobcats’ wide receiver, shooting guard, and High Jump school record-holder Jacob English has committed to Angelo State University to do the High Jump next school year. While English said he would likely play football as well, the young man has several options moving forward. English sat down with San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick to announce his commitment and to talk sports, family, and the future.
When asked why he picked Angelo State, English said he did not want to leave his family. Family is important to the young man, and he says he wants to stick around and watch his brother compete for the Bobcats next year. At the San Angelo LIVE! Studio on Wednesday, May 10, English said he needed to deliver an important message. “Happy Birthday, Mom. I hope you have a great day,” English said.
As a football player, English was one of the most dynamic parts of the ‘Cats high-octane offense. In his senior year alone, he hauled in 27 catches for 632 yards and ten touchdowns. His stat line is impressive in its own right, but it would likely be even higher if not for an ankle injury that sidelined the young man for two games last season. English’s best impact came on the biggest stage in the playoffs against El Paso Eastwood. He caught five passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
In basketball, English started slow after football but quickly became the Bobcats' most dangerous player on defense. His speed and ability to lock down opponents made every shot taken a struggle. On offense, English displayed excellent range from the three-point line and the ability to drive the basket. Along with his brother Christian “Squeaky” English, the duo pushed the ‘Cats to improve every week.
Once his time on the hardwood ended, English traded his basketball shoes for track spikes. Bobcats Head Track Coach Truman Reagan led English to the most successful High Jump season in Central High School History. At the San Angelo Relays earlier this year, English broke a 46-year-old record when he cleared 6’9” on his second attempt.
A shoo-in for the district title and a likely state berth, English came down with a serious illness around Easter just before the district meet. He was too sick to compete well at the Area meet in Odessa, and his high school track career ended there. However, Jacob says he’s not as disappointed about the outcome now as he will continue his track career with the Rams next winter.
