WATCH: Meet Angelo State University's New Tennis Coach
SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State University Athletic Department has hired Jason Potthoff to lead the women's tennis program as its new head coach, athletic director James Reid announced Wednesday morning at a press conference.
"We are excited to have Jason join our department," said Reid. "We have the highest expectations for all our sports, both in athletics and in the classroom, and Jason brings that same passion and attitude about not only being successful in tennis but knows the ultimate goal for his players is to get their degree.
Potthoff becomes the program's second head coach since the program returned in the 2017-18 season.
Potthoff comes to San Angelo with over a decade of experience coaching at the Division I level, most recently serving as the head coach at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. In his time in Milwaukee, Potthoff led the Panther tennis program to a 51-54 overall record and a 19-17 record in conference play.
"I'm very grateful to be selected to lead a team that's had a lot of recent success, and I know that they're hungry for a lot more," said Potthoff. "I'm really excited to join an athletic program that has a standard of excellence on and off the court, in the classroom and in the community. That is something that is going to continue to be hallmarks of the tennis program."
This past season, he led Milwaukee to their first-ever Horizon League Conference championship match appearance; the season before, he led the Panthers to a 14-win season, their winningest season in the program's history.
The Panther tennis program boasted the highest GPA of any program in the UW – Milwaukee athletic department all five seasons under Potthoff, with the team also earning ITA All-Academic Team plaudits every single season.
Before Milwaukee, Potthoff served as an assistant coach at the University of Houston for two seasons. There he helped guide the Cougars to an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking high of No. 38.
Before Houston, Potthoff spent four seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Missouri, overseeing recruiting and on-court player development.
Potthoff graduated from Texas A&M University in 2005, beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Texas A&M men's tennis team.
