SAN ANGELO, TX — Following the Central Bobcats' first victory of the 2023 Texas High School Football season over El Paso Montwood last Friday, September 1, Central now prepares for Abilene Cooper on homecoming week. Head Coach of the Central Bobcats, Kevin Crane, gave his weekly press conference on Labor Day to talk about his team’s performance against Montwood and about the ‘Cats upcoming matchup against Abilene Cooper.
The Bobcats left El Paso on Friday night with a hard-fought, 35-33 victory over the Rams. After both teams went back and forth throughout the game, Central finally made the defensive play needed to keep the lead. Montwood scored with a little over four minutes to go, but the ‘Cats stopped a 2-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game. Central’s offense ran out the clock and to claim victory.

“It was a good victory,” Crane said. “Anytime you can go out to El Paso and get out of there with a win, it’s a good thing.”
This young Bobcats squad continues to improve every week. Since the scrimmage, Coach Crane believes that his team is slowly but surely coming together.
“I think there’s no doubt that over the course of the scrimmage to Game 1 to Game 2, we are growing up a little bit,” Crane continued. “I was really unsatisfied with the way we scrimmaged with all the penalties we had. Over the course of the next two weeks, we’ve gotten better.”
Next up, the Bobcats host the Abilene Cooper Cougars at San Angelo Stadium for homecoming on Friday night, September 8. Cooper currently sits at 0-2 on the season, but with losses to Keller and Abilene High, Coach Crane said the ‘Cats cannot let that record fool any of them. Both teams are incredibly talented this season, and the Cougars hung tough throughout most of the games with them.
“Cooper is a really good football team,” Crane said. “I have a ton of respect for their program, for Coach Roan, and his coaches. We have a lot of history with Cooper. Last year, we played over at their place, went into overtime, and they beat us. They have a really good team and a really good defense.”
Revenge for the Bobcats will not come easy. After an overtime loss a season ago, the ‘Cats need to be perfect on offense if they want to score points against a defense with players who already received Division I College Football offers.
“We are going to have to be sharp in order to play with these guys,” Crane said.
Starting Quarterback for the Bobcats, Christian English, took another positive step when he showed true leadership and grit against Montwood last week. After week one, English took responsibility for the turnovers he contributed and said he had to do better if the Bobcats wanted to win. He fulfilled that goal last Friday. Not only did he not have any interceptions, but the Bobcats didn’t have any turnovers at all. Defensively, the ‘Cats took the ball away twice and finished the contest with a +2 in the turnover margin, moving to +1 overall on the season.
Here's Christian English on the Bobcats' first win:
Central will need more of that on Friday against Abilene Cooper. The Cougars will already be hard to score against without making any unnecessary mental mistakes. Tyree Brawlee and Jayveon Robinson ran the ball well against Montwood but will find the same task difficult against the boys up front for the Cougars. Colton Hill, Alex Lindsey, Malik Kates, and Carmelo Amigleo need to step up on offense this week.
The Bobcats host the Cougars in San Angelo on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
