EARLY— The Early Longhorns dismantled the Brady Bulldogs at Longhorn Stadium in Early, Texas in the second district game of the season.
One step forward and two steps back seemed to be the theme of the night for the Brady Bulldogs.
These two teams look similar on paper, with a sophomore signal caller, a couple of good running backs, and defenses that fly to the football. The Bulldogs started off in a hole, when it seemed like every time something good happened, something bad followed. Head coach Jaron Roberts knew he had a young team that he tried to reel in, but when the penalties started to stack up, the frustration took over. At the end, the Longhorns had won 69-8.
Early into the second quarter, the score was 35-0, and it took nearly an hour to get through the second quarter alone. Brady did show a flash when sophomore quarterback Sean Jacoby connected with Mason Airheart on a 58-yard touchdown pass. This spark was quickly snuffed out by the imposing Longhorn offense.
Early sophomore Rohyn Price completed 71% of his passes, going 15-21 for 309 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back Griffin Cheslock took 13 carries for 201 yards and two scores, while Ben Morris and Kaleb Ozuna each had one touchdown.
The receivers had a day, especially Andrew Reedy, who had four catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Ki Houston, Ben Bleth, and Reece Middleton had one touchdown apiece.
For the defense, Ozuna led the Longhorns with 13 tackles, and Dalton Adams had one sack. Reedy and Jacob McDaniel snagged two interceptions, one each, and Houston, Middleton, and Cheslock had one pass defended each.
Brady’s Jacoby went 5-18 for 87 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The duo of Dash and Bash in Jones and Daryl Adair put up 163 yards combined, rushing the football. Sophomore Ashton Taylor added six carries for 55 yards.
For the receivers, Airheart had his one catch for 58 yards and a score, while Adair caught one pass for six yards, Gauge Evans caught one for 15 yards, and Jones caught two for eight.
The Brady offensive line held up fine, allowing just one sack to the Longhorns, who had seven in their district opener.
On the Bulldog defense, it always seems like someone different is stepping up each week. Against the Longhorns, junior Dallas Cross had 10 tackles, followed by Adair with six. Jones and Evans had five each, and DeMarcus Reed had four from the defensive tackle position.
Ultimately, regardless of how people feel about the officiating in the game, you have to play through it and try to stay in line with it. While it was an ugly game for the Bulldogs, they have another game next week against the Ballinger Bearcats, who lost to the Wall Hawks in Week Two of district play. This is still a young team that has been forged in fire this season.
