NORMAN, OK — The East Texas A&M University men’s basketball team, which was in the Lone Star Conference just five years ago, shocked the University of Oklahoma 68-64 on Monday.
East Texas A&M, previously known as Texas A&M-Commerce, was a longtime member of the LSC with Angelo State.
The Lions lost to ASU 70-56 the last time they played the Rams in 2021. They moved to NCAA Division I at the end of the 2021-22 school year.
Monday’s upset truly seemed to come out of nowhere as East Texas A&M went 11-21 last year and was picked to finish in last place in the Southland Conference this season.
Yet the Lions jumped out to a 13-12 lead and never trailed again, though the game was tied 60-60 with 2:51 remaining.
Bo Aldridge scored 22 points to lead East Texas A&M to the stunning upset.
It’s the Lions’ first-ever win over a school from one of the Power Four Conferences, which includes the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12.
East Texas A&M will play again Thursday against Rice in Houston. Oklahoma, which was 21-16 last season, will host Mississippi Valley State on Friday, looking to avoid another headline-grabbing setback.
