Cowboys Blow 14-Point Lead, Fall to Cardinals in Overtime

ARLINGTON, TX — Chad Ryland kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Dallas Cowboys 33-30 at AT&T Stadium.

Arizona quarterback Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes after replacing Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter, while Tyler Allgeier finished with 191 yards from scrimmage to lead the Cardinals' comeback.

The Cowboys (3-5) led throughout regulation and held a two-touchdown advantage early in the fourth quarter before Arizona scored 20 points over the final period and overtime.

Dallas appeared headed for a victory before Minshew led an eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive in the final 65 seconds of regulation.

With Arizona trailing 30-24 and no timeouts remaining, Minshew connected with Michael Wilson for gains of 21 and 27 yards before finding him for a 13-yard touchdown with six seconds left.

Ryland missed the extra point that would have given Arizona the lead, sending the game to overtime tied at 30.

Both teams went three-and-out on their opening overtime possessions before Arizona moved into field-goal range. Wilson caught a 17-yard pass, and Allgeier added an 11-yard run to set up Ryland's winning kick.

The victory improved Arizona to 3-5 and marked its fifth consecutive win over Dallas. The Cardinals are also 5-0 at AT&T Stadium since the venue opened in 2009.

Allgeier provided Arizona's biggest offensive plays in the second half, breaking free for a career-long 63-yard touchdown run and adding a 50-yard run that helped set up his 5-yard touchdown reception.

He finished with 147 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards, with all but seven of his yards coming after halftime.

Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Wilson caught eight passes for 111 yards, including five receptions for 77 yards in the fourth quarter.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another score, but the Cowboys struggled offensively late in the game.

Arizona outgained Dallas 467-261 in total yards, while the Cowboys averaged just 2.4 yards per rushing attempt.

“What I told the guys is we obviously have to learn to finish in all three phases,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “We had a chance to do it in a lot of different ways. When you have people down, you have to finish them and that’s the most disappointing thing.”

Prescott also expressed frustration with the loss.

“Very disappointing,” Prescott said. “One of the toughest I guess I’ve been a part of. No other words for it really, other than really, really disappointing, frustrating. It’s part of this league.”

Arizona overcame several injuries during the game. Running backs Jeremiyah Love and Bam Knight left with injuries, leaving Allgeier as the Cardinals' only available running back. Receivers Kendrick Bourne and Reggie Virgil were also sidelined.

Cardinals tight end Trey McBride finished with seven receptions for 72 yards, extending his streak of games with at least seven catches to 10, the third-longest such streak in NFL history.

Dallas also lost rookie safety Caleb Downs to a concussion in the second half, while tight end Jake Ferguson exited with an ankle injury in the first quarter.

The Cowboys will look to rebound next Sunday when they visit the Indianapolis Colts. Arizona will travel to face the Seattle Seahawks.
